About Me:
Curbridge Carriage Company was born from a young boy's dream; a dream which I had when I was five and staying with an aunty and uncle who lived in Hampstead. I can see to this day, that big black shiny Rolls-Royce which one of their neighbours owned. I can remember the beautiful leather seats and the superb highly-polished walnut dash; I promised myself that I too, would one day own what Rolls-Royce described in its advertisements as 'The Best Car in the World!
About Curbridge Carriage Company and me:
It was October 2006 before that little boy's dream came true when, having taken an early retirement from full-time teaching, I found I needed something to occupy my time. I soon discovered that the majority of day time television is appalling and, although I enjoy playing my saxophones and clarinet, I couldn't do too much of that if I was to maintain the good relationship which we have with our neighbours! Being interested in classic cars, I thought owning one would be great and, if that classic could be a Rolls it would be fantastic! However, I had to get my wife Gill, on-side; after all spending a small fortune (and that's what a good Rolls costs!) on a car that only does about 12 MPG would take a good reason to convince her! Weddings, that was it, weddings. With the right car and some reasonable marketing, I could realise my dream and perhaps even make a little more than its substantial running costs would amount to! After all, proper Rolls-Royce maintenance isn't cheap!
Gill, having approved my idea, meant that the search for a proper Rolls could start. I decided against anything which was too old because I wanted my car to have reliability, creature comforts and be extremely safe to travel in. The Rolls for me was definitely a Silver Spirit which is actually termed a 'modern classic' and has rear seat belts, ABS, an ice detector and a twin level air conditioning system which is powerful enough to run 30 domestic fridges. On top of that, when new, the interior had been almost completely redesigned from that of its fore-runner the Silver Shadow, is more spacious and offers a far superior ride having an automatically adjustable height and suspension system. Some time was spent searching for the correct Rolls-Royce Silver spirit - it had to be the right colour and, on this aspect, I consulted a professional wedding photographer who advised me not to buy a dark coloured car, because the groom's attire would be lost against it and that I shouldn't buy a white or cream car, because the bride's gown would be lost against those colours. He added that few people hire a white or cream Rolls, because they have often started life painted a different colour, were somewhat tired and poorly maintained and just hired out as wedding cars rather than being owned by a Rolls-Royce enthusiast, being their absolute pride and joy and maintained regardless of cost!
After a lengthy search and many disappointments I found exactly what I was looking for! I knew it was that little boy's dream come true when , looking on the internet, I found the perfect Rolls! A 1988 Silver Spirit with just 40,000 miles from new, with a full RR service history and a folder containing old MOTs and bills for work carried out. Furthermore, it had been owned for many years by an elderly local gentleman and had been maintained by the same fully qualified Rolls-Royce and Bentley technician throughout his ownership. This technician has been looking after the car for me since I bought it. The car was actually being offered for sale, complete with its private registration number - A5 DER - by Peter Nash Specialist Car Sales of Warsash, Hampshire. The photograph above shows my Rolls on display in their plush showrooms, where its stablemates included Porches, Aston Martins, Mercedes, BMW, Jaguar, Saab Cabrios and other luxury marques. By the way, if you need an up-market car visit www.peternashspecialistcars.com , I really can't recommend them highly enough. They are truly excellent and offer an after-sales service which is second to none. My Rolls is always MOT'd by them and they carry out any minor work for me which doesn't need to be done by a factory trained Rolls-Royce and Bentley technician!

Above: A selection of three Rolls-Royes (MIne is the car parked far left) and two Bentleys from over 20 Rolls-Royces and Bentleys, belonging to members the Wessex Division of the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts' Club, photographed in front of Houghton Lodge which is situated near to Stockbridge, Hampshire. This event took place in May 2011. The gardens here are well-worth a visit!
